Chandra Release - August 3, 2020 Visual Description: SpARCS1049 The image features X-ray, optical, infrared data of a galaxy cluster named SpARCS104922.6+564032. The dominant colors in the image are cyan, light purple, pale yellow and black. The structure of the galaxy cluster resembles that of a massive blobby splatter, with small shapes of light from celestial objects like distant galaxies arranged through and around it. SpARCS1049 is a galaxy cluster located 9.9 billion light years away from Earth. Galaxy clusters contain hundreds or thousands of galaxies pervaded by hot, X-ray emitting gas that outweighs the combined mass of all the galaxies. In this image of SpARCS1049, X-rays from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (colored in light cyan/blue) have been combined with optical and infrared light data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope (red, green, and blue).
