During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A real-time procedure was executed on Aug 8 to re-initialize the flight software Thruster Command Processing subfunction in order to prevent the occurrence of an overflow condition. A Chandra image release was issued on Aug 10 describing observations of the IC 10 starburst galaxy. Starburst galaxies like IC 10 are excellent places to search for X-ray binaries because they are churning out stars rapidly. By analyzing Chandra observations of IC 10 spanning a decade, astronomers found over a dozen black holes and neutron stars feeding off gas from young, massive stellar companions. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2017/ic10/ Of note this week was the "From Chandra to Lynx: Taking the Sharpest X-ray Vision Fainter and Farther" science workshop held in Cambridge MA, Aug 8-10. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of PS17dhz, which was accepted as Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Jul 31. |
