During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A Chandra press release was issued on May 31 describing a new study of GW170817. By comparing the Chandra observations with those by the Very Large Array, researchers explain the observed X-ray emission as being due entirely to a shock wave impacting the surrounding gas. There is no sign of X-rays resulting from a neutron star. Thus, the researchers in this study claim this is a strong case for the merger of two neutron stars to then produce bursts of radiation and form a black hole. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/18_releases/press_053118.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below. |
