During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A Chandra press release was issued on Jan 11 describing observations of hundreds of supermassive black holes that have been identified in a new survey using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. The key to this finding was comparing objects in the Chandra Source Catalog to data from Sloan Digitized Sky Survey. Researchers focused on a class of objects known as “XBONGs” (X-ray bright, optically normal galaxies). This result adds to the ongoing tally of black holes and helps explain long-standing questions about XBONGs. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/23_releases/press_011123.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of SN 2022jli, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Dec 23 and an observation of SN2012ap, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Dec 27 and is coordinated with NuSTAR. |
