During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the ninth and tenth eclipses of the season on Aug 11 and 13 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A Chandra image release was issued on Aug 14 describing observations of the galaxy NGC 1232. Observations with Chandra have revealed a giant cloud of superheated gas in NGC 1232, which is about 60 million light years from Earth. Because the temperature of this gas is about 6 million degrees, it only glows in X-ray light. A collision between a dwarf galaxy and NGC 1232 is the likely cause of this gas cloud. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2013/ngc1232/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of SN 2013ej, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Aug 1. |
